Magic Marigolds

My Story

For many years now I have tried to plant an early vegetable garden.  Usually, as soon my little plants start to thrive, spring bugs annihilate them. I had just about given up. Just because I am a landscaper doesn't make me a gardener. So, one day my mother-in-law came by for a visit. My wife and I were having a discussion about not planting leafy veggies in the spring. My mother-in-law decided to put her vote in the mix. I explained that I don't like using any chemicals on or around greens.  I would rather plant cabbage and broccoli in the fall. So, she sat down and began to tell me a story. Now, I will give it to you.

Her Story

When I was a little girl, my grandmother started seeds on a window ledge. I asked "Maw, What you planting?" Her response was "Its my spring garden" She had to be crazy. Its not even March. I let it go.  Well, by the end of March, she had started the spring garden outside.  The little seeds had grown and were actually ready to bloom. She put these beautiful plants at the ends and center of each row. They were french marigolds. She said "These will keep out the bugs, pretty up the garden, and smell nice"

The Rest of the Story

No, I don't start seeds in a window. You can buy these, already started,  anywhere, even the big box stores. Guess what.., it worked. So far, there are no holes in my broccoli.
I spent less on marigolds than any chemical. Never stop learning. Realize that you can learn so much from your parents and grandparents. Pay attention when they tell you a story. You might just find flowers in your vegetable garden.

Remember, your landscape is your sanctuary. Let it bring you peace and keep you grounded. Dream it.., Build it. Let me know if I can help.
