National Arbor Day - Go Plant a Tree Today!

Image
Happy National Arbor Day - The day to encourage planting trees. National Arbor Day was first celebrated April 10, 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska.  Secretary of Agriculture, Julius Sterling Morton, was the person responsible for giving us a day of planting.  On that day, over a million trees were planted! WOW...could you imagine digging all those holes!  Prizes were offered to Counties for the most trees planted that day.  Nebraska pioneers wanted to recreate the forests they missed from the East.  So...in honor of National Arbor Day, the following are great reasons for planting your own trees.... Top reasons to plant your tree today: Trees make our world beautiful Trees clean our air Trees create homes for our wildlife to thrive Trees provide shade from the Sun Trees are a renewable resource Any questions on this topic or any other topics????  Comment and we will answer questions you may have when it comes to your own sanctuary.  Remember, Dream It....Build it.

HappyEarth Day

“ Earth Day ” is the world’s largest environmental movement striving to save our planet from new challenges which affect our everyday lives. We all need to play a role in protecting our planet. Protecting our planet means a great deal when it comes to your landscape sanctuary. We want to enjoy our flowering beds which in turn create a home for species such as butterflies and hummingbirds. Keeping our environment free from pollutants like plastics, motor oils, gas – just to name a few – will ensure we have clean water and fresh air. Please keep in mind our health as well. So many pollutants can damage the health of our communities as we have seen in the past years. We can all begin our journey by recycling . It is very simple to set up a system to recycle your plastics, glass etc. You can purchase several bins each a different color and mark these…just like the example here. SIMPLE and you are helping to protect our environment. It takes plastic at leas

5 Ways to Keep a Green and Healthy Lawn

Image
It's grass cutting time. Your lawn is beginning to green up. Now lets talk about how to keep it that way. 1. Fertilize . Consult your local landscaper (or Majestic Outdoor Sanctuary) to set up a fertilizing schedule for your lawn type. During your consultation, you should know the square footage of your turf area and type of grass that you have. A good fertilizing schedule should include weed control (pre and post emergents). Even if you are going organic, there are some products that can help prevent turf weeds. Weed management is not an easy thing to tackle. But it can be done with a little advice from a professional. 2. Mower maintenance. Your mower is one of the most important tools that you use to keep a green lawn. Do your maintenance and keep your cutting deck clean. Thatch buildup under the deck holds weed seeds that can be transferred from one area to another area. Thus, turning a small weed problem into a big weed problem. The excess thatch also harbors fungus

Magic Marigolds

My Story For many years now I have tried to plant an early vegetable garden.  Usually, as soon my little plants start to thrive, spring bugs annihilate them. I had just about given up. Just because I am a landscaper doesn't make me a gardener. So, one day my mother-in-law came by for a visit. My wife and I were having a discussion about not planting leafy veggies in the spring. My mother-in-law decided to put her vote in the mix. I explained that I don't like using any chemicals on or around greens.  I would rather plant cabbage and broccoli in the fall. So, she sat down and began to tell me a story. Now, I will give it to you. Her Story When I was a little girl, my grandmother started seeds on a window ledge. I asked "Maw, What you planting?" Her response was "Its my spring garden" She had to be crazy. Its not even March. I let it go.  Well, by the end of March, she had started the spring garden outside.  The little seeds had grown and

3 Reasons that Earthworms are Attacking your Driveway

Image
Earthworms and Concrete So, welcome to spring. And it seems like all the earthworms want to get on your driveway and sidewalk and die. You are obviously wondering why. Otherwise, you wouldn't be reading this. In order to get to the bottom of the problem, we need to learn a little about these little wonders. Earthworms are a small segmented invertebrate that live in burrows under the surface of the soil. Seeing earthworms in your lawn is a sign that your soil is in good shape. It also means that there are plenty. Your lawn is not impacted and dry. Well draining soil is good for more than just the grass. Earthworms don't actually breathe. They absorb oxygen through their skin. The soil must be moist and loose in order for this to happen. Reason one.  Earthworms like a balanced moisture level. During spring, the moisture level in the soil goes up and down. It will rain a good bit. This makes the soil too wet. So, they travel up to find an area that is more dry. This in

Don't Let Mosquitoes Affect your Sanctuary

Image
Don't Let Mosquitoes Affect Your Sanctuary Its getting warmer. Soon these little blood suckers will be trying to crash your landscape. It's pretty easy to discourage them.  Not much is worse than enjoying a peaceful day and getting attacked by these little monsters. It is so hard to get grounded and enjoy some peace with the knowledge that soon you will be scratching all over. Mosquitoes carry diseases and parasites. I'm pretty sure that you have heard all of this before. You have probably experienced it for yourself. But, did you know that they affect your pets? Believe it or not, mosquitoes love dogs. Mosquitoes carry heart worms. This can be detrimental to your little furry loved one. So, lets see what you can do to make them go away.  Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. On a regular basis, you should walk your sanctuary. Look for any standing water. Look for water in flower pots, children's toys, and unused buckets.  Make sure that water features

Fire Ants!

Make your own Ant Control What you need Spray bottle (old Windex bottle) 1 oz dish soap 4 oz Neem oil  2 oz Orange oil old broom handle Any old spray bottle will do the trick. As for the dish soap, I use Dawn. Dawn is very sticky and it helps keep the oils suspended in the mixture. The Neem oil can be purchased at Amazon or Tractor Supply. The product I use is Garden Safe Neem Extract. The orange oil is an essential oil that I bought from Ebay. How to Use Mix the ingredients together in bottle. Fill the bottle with water.  Now for the scary part.  Early in the morning, find the ant mounds. While it is still cool outside the ants will be less active. First, spray a circle around the mound. Second, use the broom handle to press a hole into the center of the mound. Make the hole as deep as possible. Third, spray the hole thoroughly, drenching it. At this point, you may want to move back a bit. Depending the weather and the size of the mound, you may need t
